Technology staff with Confederation College are investigating a potential security breach after a malware incident downed many of the college’s online services over the weekend.

At this time, there is no evidence that any personal information of students has been removed or taken, though a forensic investigation is being conducted by a cyber expert. If personal information was taken, Confederation College will contact those affected.

The college says that they learned of the issue on February 1, and core IT services were restored on February 3. The college says they have since installed additional protective software to detect any suspicious activity. All students are advised to reset their passwords as an added security precaution.

However, Confederation College’s email service is still down. Staff are hoping to restore email by the end of the week, with secondary IT services to follow.

“We would like to take this opportunity to thank our incredible IT team for the significant efforts they have made to minimize impacts of this incident to our college community. We would also like to thank our faculty and staff for the level of care they have demonstrated in their support of students,” wrote college staff, in a prepared release.

Students with college desktops or laptops that are working much slower than usual are asked to call 807-475-6488. Students who were affected by the outage and may have missed course work or deadlines are asked to speak to their teachers.
